One of the cheapest and healthiest ways to prepare food is usually to make it from scratch. On days you are too busy to make hummus or bliss balls, healthy alternatives are lining the grocery aisles.

Here is a list of some of my favourites items available at most grocery stores.

Life Health Foods is a company that has a variety of healthy food labels. My favourite is the black bean and beetroot burger from Bean Supreme. This chewy patty has an umami flavour and is fulling and satisfying. I have these burgers on my weekly menu; the perfect dinner with cabbage slaw and baked kumara wedges.

Beetroot Burger

Lisa’s hummus and dips flavour will cancel boredom and pack flavour into any meal. Some of my favourite hummus include beetroot and roasted cashew and the kumara, coconut and turmeric. The feta dip with baby spinach and black pepper is the perfect addition to a pasta.

Macro. You will find a variety of products under this label from Countdown. I especially enjoy their Spice BBQ Corn Chips.

It is made from non-GMO corn and organic ingredients. I won’t classify this as a health food but it is a much healthier alternative to potato chips, and they are also gluten-free.

Pure Delish. This remarkable company sell handmade quality muesli, cereals and snacks. All their products taste so amazing it was difficult to select a favourite. The Choc-nut Nograin-ola and the Spiced apple fig and walnut slab is my choice when I need to spoil someone with niche gluten-free goodies.

Batchwells Kombucha.

Purity is what comes to mind when enjoying this product- from the first sip, the ingredient list to the glass bottle. An ideal summer drink with probiotic benefits. Moms to-be this an excellent non-alcoholic alternative. It only contains about 1/3 of the caffeine content of tea (but be careful to overdo it😊) . They have a variety of flavours, I am in love with the pineapple and ginger at the moment.

Little Island Coconut Creamery

“Ice-cream is exquisite – what a pity it isn’t illegal.” Voltaire.

Delicious, dairy-free Ice cream and coconut milk. The ice-cream has a sup creamy mouthfeel. Little might be in their name but they are BIG on flavour. Once you have tasted these products, you won’t go back to sickly sweet, commercial varieties. All the ingredients are organic and traded in line with Fairtrade best practise where possible.
