When you are a lover of food but have certain dietary restrictions, it is crucial to have a list of allergy-friendly restaurants to prevent pre-eat-out stress. Auckland has an incredible variety of eateries that cater to a variety of health-needs; gluten-free and vegan options are the norm and not the exception. Even most fast food outlets provide alternatives for special diets.

This past year I have moved from one foodie capital; Johannesburg to another; Auckland.  A wonderful antidote for my culture shock was to experience the hospitality of New Zealand. The spirit of welcome runs deep here. In Māori, they call it “Manaakitanga”, the act of welcoming and looking after guests. I have experienced this first-hand. I visited many coffee shops and restaurants to submerge myself in the Kiwi cuisine. The kaleidoscope of cultures in Auckland ranges from Asian, Moari, European and Pacific Islanders. All these cultures add richness and variety to the New Zealand cuisine.

Here are a few of my favourite coffee shops and eateries I explored so far. Excuse me for any bias- I live in Auckland central so mainly focused on places this side of the harbour bridge. Since I have a gluten and dairy intolerance and enjoy eating plant-based food, I also highlighted eateries that specifically makes provision for that.

Little Bird Organics– Exceptional quality raw, vegan and organic food.

I found this café so inspiring if you are considering a vegan lifestyle or want to incorporate more plant-based food into your diet.  Their menu could easily give you a dopamine overload. The raw cheesecake is rich and creamy it makes you forget about your dairy addiction, and the kumara orange hotcakes hit every note; sweet, tart, nutty, and comforting!

Major Sprout– This is an elegant health-conscious eatery where you can still have a naughty indulgence like a gourmet burger and buttermilk pancakes. The creamy mushrooms are rich and flavourful addition to their perfectly poached eggs, enjoy it with their freshly baked sourdough.

Wise Cicada– I have enjoyed their variety of vitamin-packed beverages and raw treats. I can’t wait to try their vegan cheese platter.

Pioneer Pies. A hearty pie shop in Albany. Their Thai coconut curry pie recently won the award from the Vegan Society of New Zealand. It didn’t surprise me- the filling reminded me of something as comforting as chicken pie- except that it was vegan. Gluten-free options are also available.

Al Volo

Al Volo is experts at making pizza, but they have also mastered a gluten-free pizza crust. They use top quality ingredients. They have a cosy ambience for a romantic date night. I always have a pleasant experience there since the staff is very knowledgeable about catering for special dietary needs.

Mar and Tierra

This exciting Latin-fusion eatery recently opened at the new Auckland fish market. Be prepared for a flavour explosion. This was certainly the case in trying the smoked beef brisket with smoked beef brisket on arepas (corn cakes).  I was delighted to find out that ALL their dishes are gluten-free!

“Thank you’’, Auckland for providing me with soulful winter comfort.  I am looking forward to experiencing your refreshing summer oasis.
